Meet the Horses!

LIVING PURPOSEFUL LIVES

Adopted, rescued or rehomed

The WalkSublime horses are Mel’s dearly loved companions either adopted, rescued or rehomed.

Each horse graduates through our proprietary training and socialisation program The Sublime Way.

Our horses do not live in stables but roam large paddocks with their friends on eighty blissful acres in the picturesque Adelaide Hills, South Australia.

They live purposeful lives as willing walking partners for people ranging from absolutely no experience with horses, right the way through to horse owners.

Our Approach to Training

Acknowledgement of each individual horse’s emotions in the moment, and respect for their right as a sentient being to make their own choices, underpins our approach to training.

For more details see Our Training Program ‘The Sublime Way’.

Horse Riding

Four of our six horses are occasionally ridden on the trail privately, something Mel treasures as a privilege.

However the WalkSublime horses are not offered to the public for riding in any capacity.

It’s just not what we’re about.

Freedom for horses

Koszi

Australian Brumby

Born 2016 | Adopted from NSW 2019 | 13.2 hh | 380kg
Burnt buckskin gelding

Mel’s mini Man From Snowy River mountain horse, Koszi (“Cosi”) was adopted from the wonderful team of volunteers at Save The Brumbies in NSW as a two year old.

We walk Koszi in public with great pride because he’s a classic example of the Australian Heritage Brumby’s loving nature, loyalty and courage.

This little Brumby is proof of his breed’s ability to adapt with confidence thanks to their inherent temperament.

Koszi and his brethren are a living part of our country’s history and all Australians’ heritage. Mel firmly believes a better plan can be put to our government for management of numbers, replacing current cruel waste.

Saxon and founder

Saxon

Andalusian X Warmblood

Born 2016 | Rehomed from NSW 2019 | 15.0hh | 520kg
Mahogany bay gelding

Now here’s a young man with presence!

Unbelievably, Saxon was abandoned as a foal, rescued and raised by a loving lady and her young daughter in NSW before finding his forever home with Mel.

The love and care he received in his early days reflects in his trusting, kind and inquisitive nature today. Saxon tries very hard to please. He is a particularly sensitive soul and wears his heart on his sleeve.

Being an extrovert, Saxon’s very interested in exploring new surroundings and new people so if you’re wearing a hat around this horse, it may not be long before you’re not!

Kite

Kite

Arabian

Born 2015 | Rehomed from VIC 2019 | 14.2hh | 460kg
Black/brown mare

As good fortune would have it, Kite didn’t grow tall enough for high level endurance riding competition. She was offered for sale as a three year old and after travelling to VIC to meet her, and the family who lovingly raised her, Mel trusted her gut and Kite’s future was sealed.

In the same way a restaurant is known for their signature dish, Kite was to become WalkSublime’s signature horse. Sensible and self-assured; considerate of others; trusting. A temperament as cool as a cucumber. And innate beauty that shines from within.

Reliably showing calm regard for new situations and confidence in herself, Kite embodies what WalkSublime is all about.

Torquey

Torquey

Thoroughbred ex racehorse

‘He Is Golden’

Born 2012 | Rehomed in SA 2020 | 16.2hh | 615kg
Bay gelding

Hard to believe this supremely gentle giant charged around South Australian racetracks until he was 8 years old.

Torquey ran his last race in Jun 2020 retiring unsound – defined as ‘an abnormal deviation in the structure of a horse rendering it partially or completely useless’. While sadly a far too common outcome for racehorses, Mel had other ideas.

His body may have been unfit for riding but his mind was sound. It was clear this horse was an old soul and still had a lot to give. Upon coming to the place he’d call home for the rest of his life, he was not to be confined to endless days in a paddock.

With time and calm, well-guided effort, mutual trust was earned and Torquey started to venture out into the world. The public’s reaction to his presence, drawn to him both young and old, was such that a Racing SA mascot rug was custom made for him.

Quattro

Quattro

Thoroughbred ex racehorse

‘Babe In Boots’

Born 2013 | Rehomed from NT 2021 | 15.1hh | 500kg
Chestnut mare

Quattro ran her last race in Aug 2021 and joined Mel soon after. This mare was fortunate to retire ‘sound’ from racing – fit for riding – meaning the world is her oyster.

Re-named for those striking matching boots, Quattro has never quite lost the look of being in race condition! Highly athletic with a huge amount of power in her hindquarters, yet far more suited to living a quiet life.

Quattro’s training with Mel began by showing her she could enjoy being taken out in the float. That she could relax in new environments with a human leader. To learn she would be protected, kept safe, and to build her self confidence out in the world.

Stepping into the float no longer meant she was required to perform on a racetrack upon her arrival at an unknown destination.

Meet The Horses 'Scout'

Scout

Gypsy Cob X

New Forest pony

Born 2014 | Rehomed from SA 2024 | 14.0hh | 490kg
Pinto gelding

Scout is the newest member of our team, arriving at the farm in the most unplanned of ways in September 2024! It seems Scout was destined to become a wellness walking companion for he’s not a ridden horse. The farm is his fourth, and final, home.

Scout thrives in the company of humans. After Mel agreed to rehome him she made an incredible discovery – when he was just two years old he’d been a cherished visitor for residents in nursing homes and private properties in VIC with one of his original owners.

He is currently in our training program, learning at his own pace from his more experienced friends and with Mel’s steadfast presence beside him. Happy and comfortable in our float, he’s now onto discovering forest trails together, local beaches and his favourite – the horse playground (agility park)!
